The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to crack in two, as the first official trailer for Avengers: Infinity War has just dropped, and with it, a cavalcade of exciting revelations. The nineteenth feature film in the expansive interconnected comic book landscape that is the MCU promises their biggest adventure yet, and it’s all hands on deck as the heroes from every corner of this colorful universe are showing up to lend a hand.
After this (and the next Avengers film, which serves as a direct follow-up to Infinity War), Marvel Studios claims the world they’ve built up in the years since 2008’s humble hit Iron Man will be changed forever. I’ll believe that when I see it, but until then, we can feast our eyes on one of the biggest collection of superheroes ever brought to the big screen.
This includes, among many others, Chris Evans (Captain America) Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor) , Scarlett Johanson (Black Widow) Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Paul Bettany (Vision), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Benedict Wong (Wong), Zoe Saldana (Gomora), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Vin Diesel (Groot), Dave Bautista (Drax), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), and as lead villain Thanos, Josh Brolin.
Looks like Josh Brolin’s purple-skinned alien despot Thanos isn’t playing games this time. After a brief appearance in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, and even quieter cameos in the post-credits of The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, he’s grown rather tired of these pesky heroes running around snatching up his Infinity Stones before he can get his enormous hands on them.
Meanwhile, high school hero Spider-Man’s suiting up with a new costume, and Black Panther’s entire nation looks ready to go to war. But not before getting Captain Rogers a new vibranium shield, and thawing out the sleeping Winter Soldier to bolster the ranks of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Meanwhile, a one-eyed Thor has his first encounter with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo seem to have injected their brand of deep character focus and intensity to the proceedings after their splendid work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, the latter now serving as a prelude to the crossover bonanza that Infinity War is sure to be. With them at the helm, I can be confident that the story will matter as much as that awe-inspiring action.
Avengers: Infinity War invades theaters May 4, 2018.
