Pacific Rim: Uprising is almost upon us. The bright and sunny sequel to the dark, rainsoaked Guillermo Del Toro original is set to rally the troops for an all-out brawl against the other-dimensional Kaiju, who have returned to the post-war-torn world believed to have been saved from their monstrous wrath in the last installment. Just like at a top online casino, Alas, too much popcorn is on the line to say goodbye to the giant beasties and their eternal enemies, the robotic Jaegers with their shouty human pilots.
Among them this time is John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) who carries the torch after the departure of his character’s father, portrayed last time by Idris Elba. Boyega leads a cast of mostly fresh faces including Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, and Adria Arjona to join returning stars Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Burn Gorman.
What continues to have us jazzed is the inclusion of actor Mackenyu Arata, known around these parts as the superpowered dystopian death-dealer Drive Type Next in the 2015 special-effects actioner Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future. He frickin loves battling monsters, apparently. And we couldn’t be happier to see him as part of the slightly higher-profile Pacific Rim follow-up. Even if it’s only for like three seconds.
They grow up so fast.
Big or small, Arata’s role is at least significant enough for us to spot him, albeit ultra-briefly, in the new trailer. Once at the 0:58 mark alongside Boyega, Spaeny, and Eastwood. Then again at 1:27 when Boyega addresses a group of Jaeger pilots ready to put the apocalypse on another hiatus.
Oh, and there’s a roly-poly Jaeger too, if you’re into that.
It’s definitely a movie!
Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil, Spartacus) takes over directing duties on this new flick, sure to pack all the loud declarations of emotional intent and illogical but cool-looking battle tactics your senses can withstand before the end of its earth-shattering runtime. A sight to behold this spring.
Pacific Rim: Uprising invades theaters March 23, 2018. The date for that apocalypse the Kaiju keep threatening is TBD.
