In the weird world of the Ninties, there were tons of strange, supernatural shows, including Power Rangers. What if two directors from Power Rangers, however, created a show with Karate Mermaids, with two of the stars of Power Rangers and VR Troopers? You get Sirens, a TV Pilot that, while not completely unknown, was what Geekscape referred to as “Obscure of the Highest Order.” Hit the jump for more!
Dan’s Toku Rants recently released this gem of TV and Ameritoku history, who’s staff list reads like a relative Who’s Who of the genre, including Power Rangers writers, directors, and producers Douglas Sloan and Ann Austen, along with Visual Effects/Director Steve Wang of Guyver and Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight fame.
As previously mentioned, this wasn’t exactly unknown. Both Brad Hawkins and Jason Frank have mentioned this at various points, and a writer at Geekscape even mentions having been at a con where Frank screened the pilot, but did not remember what had been said of it, other than that it not being picked up was not due to any sort of politics or otherwise; simply standard TV practices.
Nobody knows what would have happened if Sirens had been picked up, but we do know that Brad and Jason are now on the con circuit, and Fergie joined a little band called the Black Eyed Peas.
The jury is still out on if Fergie is better off for it.
What do you think of the pilot? Would you have watched this show? Let us know in the comments and forums, and be sure to keep it here for the latest in Tokusatsu news!
