Following a press release back in May, the forthcoming production of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie finally found itself new additions to its creative team.
X-Men: First Class scribes Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller have officially been tasked to provide the screenplay for the new film which will also be executive produced by veteran scribe and former partner with Alex Kurtzman, writer Roberto Orci. The new film marks the first major feature-length effort since Saban Comapany launched the American Tokusatsu crossover hit series on TV almost 20 yearz ago, prior to two Hollywood films hit the big screen between 1995 and 1997.
The new film is part of a newly announced joint venture between Lionsgate and Saban Brands, which grants the film a reboot to attract audiences who have contributed to the major successes of the former, with films such as the Hunger Games and Divergent film franchises, both which are currently in production with releases pending. Official updates are still developing pertaining to who will star in the new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot, so stay tuned for more information.
In the meantime, Stentz and Miller ate currently providing their services on other projects, including the screenplay for Top Gun 2 with producer Jerry Bruckheimer while Orci is still on deck to direct Star Trek 3 for a 2016 release upon greenlight.

It’s beginning to feel like Bob Orci and his Amazing Friends have some kind of personal vendetta against me. He and his cohorts fucked up Transformers, Star Trek, Ender’s Game, Amazing Spider-Man 2, Parts: The Clonus Horror (hah), and now he’s gunning for something else I love. Fantastic.

There’s a VERY BIG upswing from that. Transformers may have gotten fucked up to you, but the shit tons of money it brought in made it so that we could get all manner of different toy lines, comics and Transformers Prime which I thought was a fantastic cartoon. You don’t have to like the movies, but this will mean the entire brand will get a ton more money to play with and that means a ton more products for hardcore fans to enjoy. Who knows.. maybe they’ll even hook us Super Sentai fans up with some releases of the Japanese shows. If it becomes as sucessful as the Transformers franchise, the sky is the limit for what we will get out of this.

I…. wouldn’t say that…. I know they listen to fans and the PR Series IS taking a new direction with a new creative team. If they didn’t care about what fans thought about the quality of the show…. why change creative teams?
And again.. more money for the franchise means more awesome chances able to be taken for hardcore fans and what we want.

Look, I dig toys and stuff as much as the next guy who has a shelf in
his room dedicated to robot dragons from Japanese shows, but ultimately
what I want is an attempt at some character, maybe a little care put
into the plot and dialog, and most of all, something that echos the
spirit of Power Rangers. I’m not looking for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s
Nest, but something along the lines of Pacific Rim would do.
The
problem is that both Thor and X-Men 4 were seriously re-written before
the cameras rolled on either of those movies so I have zero idea about
how well they do or don’t write. What I do know is: Even if they’re good
writers, their work gets approved or rejected or altered at the whims
of the producer, and Bob Orci is one of the worst hacks in the history
of genre filmmaking. He completely misunderstands every single thing he
touches- stuff that is not at all hard to ‘get’ (like Star Trek and
Spider-Man)- so how in the hell is he supposed to know what makes a good
Power Rangers film?
Yes, it’s super cool that we’re going to
get a bunch of new product to consume. Yes, it’s super cool that this
film will help (along with Godzilla, Pacific Rim, etc.) to shine a light
on tokusatsu. But what I really want, more than any of the merch, is a
good movie. I can’t be excited for the movie with that anti-talented,
brain dead ass-clown standing watch over the whole thing.
And I
seriously doubt we’ll ever get Super Sentai shows in their original
unadulterated forms stateside- Saban employees have been very emphatic
that such a thing isn’t happening. Of course, there are always other
super sentai shows out there that could use a freaking mainstream
American DVD release (COUGH KAMEN RIDER COUGH COUGH ZONE FIGHTER COUGH
COUGH MORE ULTRAMAN HACK WHEEZE), and maybe those releases become more
likely. Cool. But then that doesn’t take into account the worst case
scenario: They make an awful movie, it bombs, and all of this stuff
continues to be stuck in its own little ghetto. If we had someone with
some freaking talent working as the producer, maybe we’d at least get a
decent movie even if it ended up bombing (a bombing that has at least
50/50 odds).

PS: For the record I didn’t particularly care for Transformers Prime, either, but
to each their own. I will admit that Prime is leagues better than any of the
Bayformer movies, but then so is dying of legionnaires disease.
