    Two comments I have:

    1) Technically, Gokaiger is an AU world as well. I haven’t seen earlier Sentai series myself (Gokaiger is my first), but from what everyone has told me, the individual series take place in separate worlds, the VS crossover movies are considered a separate continuity (since most of them cannot be canon). Gokaiger takes place in that VS crossover movie continuity, instead of the world of any other series. This is supported in-series by the numbering of the teams, as at least two (Gingaman and Shinkenger) have backstories of previous teams, going back generations, and yet Goranger from the 70s is still considered in-series to be the first team.

    2) I hope in the second part that you also address accessibility. To me, that’s the biggest change, as Decade was the 2nd KR series I saw (W being my first, which didn’t help), and I didn’t find it very accessible to a new fan, as you were expected to know and understand the previous series. Gokaiger, on the other hand, is quite open even if you don’t know the earlier series. Personally, I chalk it up to the way the protagonists were done. Tsukasa’s powers are to know everything he needs to know to fill the role assigned to him in each world. They tried using Natsume a bit to explore and learn, but most of it Tsukasa already knows, so they expect the audience to know as well. In Gokaiger, the core 5 know nothing about the earlier sentai, and have to learn it. Even after Gai is introduced, Gai has to explain everything to them (and the audience), making it more new-viewer friendly.

I don’t know if I’d look at Gokaiger as an AU world, it could be that Gokaiger is in a different continuity to the rest of the Sentai series I’ve approached it looking at Sentai as its own universe while Kamen Rider having been set apart in their own worlds starting from Kuuga. If Gokaiger was a form of AU world it would through a few questions into the Shinkenger series as Decade visits that and that takes place within Shinkenger’s continuity. When it comes to team numbering I assume it half ignored and half that the current people of Earth see Goranger as the first because knowledge of those teams has been lost or they weren’t known as Sentai (I’ve not seen every Sentai show people with more knowledge could add more depth to your argument)

      – EDIT – Refer to Perry Keeley… knows his Sentai History better then I

As both series are anniversary series I perhaps should have cover accessibility more, however I think both handle that issue quite well; Gokaiger has a core team that gets heavy story emphasis and back story complemented by past Sentai teams, older members don’t appear much until Gai is introduced which allows him to explain older members to the younger audience Kamen Rider on the other hand changes everything each series, even the format, unlike Sentai which generally consists of 5 or 3 core members to begin with, in this case we have the AU worlds which introduce the concepts of the world, Rider powers and villains for viewers unaware of them. generally though I’d have to say watch a few more other shows before you watch these two as it means so much more when you see returning characters you know and love.

Having literally watched every Super Sentai series I can tell you, No, all Super Sentai take place in the SAME universe. While most series have a history of going back for generations, most of those sentai are also “We do things that no other sentai handles.” Gingaman and Shinkenger the two examples you used are both teams that handle a very specific type of enemy. The Goseigers are hidden from the world and wipe the memory of those they encounter, as do the Hurricangers. Other series will also make references to each other or the events of a cross over movie within the series proper, while this became less prominent in the later series, it was a major point in the older ones, Go-Ranger (The first Sentai) was technically the prototype for the JAKQ. Even going as far as to have the JAKQ special be considered the Go-Ranger series finale. Remember most sentai don’t even take place in the same area of japan.

But this article really hit the nail on the head as to where Decade had its failings. If they wouldn’t have gone the route of the “I forgot everything” main character his traits wouldn’t have been so so out there. The lack of use of the secondary characters and the plot holes that a truck would fit through also didn’t do the series any favors.

      Can’t wait til part two.

        You’re correct.
It’s just that different teams’ fights don’t overlap, except for the VS movies – that are always made to fit into both series’ continuity.

Gosh, it’s been busy around here. Between work initiatives, holiday parties, shopping, wrapping, and being a mom, there wasn’t much time left over. I’m going to try and do some catch up within the next few days. We had a lovely Christmas holiday, and especially enjoyed starting new traditions with our kids. (first year with kid(s) in the plural!) As always, I enjoyed decorating and wrapping, and let E get in and help a little.

I liked the review overall, but I think the alternate takes on the Heisei Riders was actually better that if they tried to make Decade in continuity with the other series. In fact, I actually liked it better than when I thought it was going to be the actual actors returning as the characters, because the reimaginings did some interesting takes on the worlds. Like Kiva’s showing a world where fangires and humans are trying to coexist, which was only hinted at in Kiva’s ending.

The analysis was, for the most part, right on point. The single glaring fault lies within the poor grammar. This fact honestly made it a bit awkward to read through.
