Review: Figuarts Zero – Terror Dopant

—

I’ll admit, a part of me was bummed when we found out that Terror, Smilodon, and Taboo were going to be Zeroes, considering I hadn’t bought a single Zero yet (and I still haven’t) but I decided that they were from W, so I needed to own them. Now I know how these things work. They are statues. No articulation. Just a pile of plastic, some great detail, and a few bonus accessories. Of course, this carries some flaws, so let’s get on with the review.

The package is what I was expecting. It takes a lot of the cues from the One Piece Figuarts Zero releases, but adds a bit of touches from the standard S.H.Figuarts so they don’t look too bad on a shelf together. It’s done in black with white accents. Woulda liked to see some blue and red, but oh well.

As I said, the figure has no articulation, and no moveable parts whatsoever. Keeping this in mind, the sculpt has to be spot on perfect, right? Well…no. Don’t get me wrong, the sculpt is excellent, and I honestly don’t feel like anything is missing. His body is sculpted great, with the darker black accent lines colored in with glossy paint. His headdress is done perfectly, with every line detail present in one way or another. His head is near perfect. You can even see the different layers, from the inside bandages, the outside skull like piece, and the mouthpiece that looks like a spray of hardened vomit. Perfect! He even has a nicely sculpted squid like thing on his stomach. Paint is pretty damn good too. The pants include a nice red gradient so it’s not a flat red. The driver is painted well, and everything about the figure is just fantastic. However, he doesn’t come without flaws. His height is a bit of an issue. Ryubee was no short man, and Terror if anything had even more height then he did as a human. Unfortunately, when scaled next to the common SHF, Terror turns up shorter. Not by a lot, but enough to notice. Needless to say, Terror has to hang out in the back of displays in order to at least give the appearance of scale.

He does some with some cool accessories. He comes with a clear piece that attaches to his left foot to help him stand with or without a stand. I honestly just prefer to use the stand. Speaking of, the stand is done in Sonozaki Gold, with Terror’s Logo, “Terror” and “Kore ga shinno kyoufu da!!” which translated to “This is true terror!!” Pretty awesome, and helps his balance greatly. Lastly, he comes with the Evil Tail, the family heirloom so to speak. The best part is, in white lettering is “Wakana,” “Raito,” “Saeko,” “Fumine,” and “Ryubee” written in their appropriate hiragana and kanji. The fact that they could write that well under such tiny conditions is fantastic. Also included is an Evil Tail box to put the brush in. The inside of the box is plain, but the outside is detailed nice.

Overall, Terror is pretty nice for huge fans of W that want the leader of the Sonozaki Family to hang out with any SHF Dopants you’ve collected so far. Otherwise, I would say it’s a pretty easy pass, considering the scale issue, and the whole fact that the Figuarts Zero figures lack articulation, limiting playability. Regardless, it’s still an incredibly well done statue that can really only be hindered by being posed next to an actual S.H.Figuart. Moderately recommended.
