Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters is stomping its way into the print medium with a new comic based on this, the first official animated feature for the long-running Godzilla franchise. The giant lizard’s story will be told in manga form based on the character designs from the film, with new material only found in this version of the tale. Published in Shonen Jump this March and illustrated by Youth Kurahashi. Meanwhile, the kaiju anime trilogy continues its rampage as the second of the three gets its title. What a marvelous year it will be for monsters.
Natalie brings us the news for the manga, which will feature added backstory for the film’s cast of characters, as we await the arrival of the next post-apocalyptic kaiju throwdown just months later.
And the name of that throwdown, the second in a planned three-film animated saga, has been revealed, in all its verbose glory. Many have enjoyed taking a crack at a workable translation, but we’ll go with Scified for now and call it Godzilla: Decisive Battle, Mobile Breeder City. Bet you can’t say that three times fast. Though, to be fair, it’s not nearly the longest title a Godzilla flick has ever gotten. Sometimes the film titles are as gargantuan as the monsters found within.
Featuring the likes of Godzilla’s famous foe, MechaGodzilla, and another enormous version of Godzilla perhaps unlike any we’ve seen before, it’s sure to dazzle audiences in the coming year, as the film officially hits Japanese theaters in May.
In the meantime, Netflix swears it’s going to release Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters in early 2018 for westerners to feast their peepers on, after the original expectation for a late 2017 release proved false. Here’s yet another trailer to distract us while we wait.
