The fire-breathing lord of lizards is back in live-action form with Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the Legendary Pictures production due out next year, and here’s a couple pictures from the film to prove it. While the unstoppable kaiju continues his rampage across multiple entertainment platforms at once, including Toho Studios’ ongoing animated trilogy, the Legendary sequel to the 2014 franchise-starter is revving up to take the planet by storm, literally.

That first film kicked off not only the current western film series for Godzilla, but also a larger continuity known as the MonsterVerse, featuring the likes of King Kong and a number of other classic creatures, paving the way for 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, and the next link in the chain following King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs Kong.

The film stars Millie Bobby Brown of Stranger Things fame, and Bates Motel‘s Vera Farmiga, as a mother-daughter duo who have links to an organization trying to wrangle the deadly daikaiju with monster-controlling technology. Between them, these celebrated actors have quite the reputation handling scary beasts of all sorts, so we can expect them to be more than up for this task.

So too is director Michael Dougherty, whose talents were seen in the horror anthology flick Trick r Treat, as well as the creepy Christmas film Krampus, featuring a plethora of fascinating creature effects that seem like a perfect fit for this monster mash, where not only Godzilla is promised to appear. We have renowned kaiju Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah stomping their way out of the Toho vault for this one.

Dougherty had this to say to Entertainment Weekly:

The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we would react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting… but there’s paranoia and endless speculation about whether he is the only one out there or whether we’re threatened by others like his kind.

Rodan’s been kind of a sidekick character, but I’ve always had a soft spot for him. In a lot of ways he’s more powerful than Godzilla. He’s like this winged A-bomb. I think we’ve done him justice.

The director ensures that, when we see Godzilla unleash his trademark blue flame into the murky skies, it will be at a key moment in the film.

He also suggests that, though the focus of his feature will be on the aforementioned Toho monsters, there may be “breadcrumbs” that direct us back toward Kong, who will face off with the other King in the year following Dougherty’s movie.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters arrives in theaters May 31, 2019.
