N.Y. Maxman is gearing up for another pass. The third in the Maxman comedy action series, continuing their trend of hiring basically everyone you’ve ever seen in any recent Kamen Rider and Super Sentai production known to man, had its film festival debut in April 2017. Now, the tokusatsu superhero send-up returns to Japanese theaters next month, offering another chance for fans of the subgenre to see some of their recent favorites on the big screen.

For the unfamiliar, the series began in 2015 with Mr. Maxman, starring Chiba Yudai aka angelic warrior GoseiRed of Tensou Sentai Goseiger as a sad sack news presenter who just can’t catch a break, until he discovers a pair of glasses that give him amazing powers. The 2017 sequel Bros. Maxman, as the name implies, follows Maxman’s brother in the film, a PA at the same news station played by Ryusei Ryo aka KyoryuRed from the dinosaur-themed Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger.

Finally, N.Y. Maxman stars Inaba Yu aka Evel Knievel stand-in Kamen Rider Mach from Kamen Rider Drive, rounding out the trilogy with Maxman’s grandson and his adventures in New York as a superpowered detective.

Between them, these three films pack an insane amount of talent from the world of transforming heroes, including Kaname Jun (G3, Kamen Rider Agito), Maruyama Atsushi (KyoryuGold, Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger), Uchida Rio (Kiriko, Kamen Rider Drive), Matsushima Shota (Brain, Kamen Rider Drive), Yamaya Kasumi (Momoninger, Shuriken Sentai Ninninger), Murakami Kohei (Kaixa, Kamen Rider Faiz), Kubota Yuki (Zangetsu, Kamen Rider Gaim) and much more.

Presented by Super Hero Time conductors TV Asahi, this who’s-who of henshin heroism is like a snapshot of the subgenre at the time of each film’s initial release. Sadly, not many from other non-TV Asahi productions make it into the picture unless by mere accident, but there’s no mistaking the trilogy’s intention to fill the screen with recognizable heroes for those with a love of the wonderful weirdness that is tokusatsu today.

Mr. Maxman and Bros. Maxman are available now on Region 2 DVD in their original Japanese language.
