At long last, he arrives. Ever since the Godzilla franchise branched out, sending the atomic lizard on a rampage through the landscape of animation with Toho Studios’ new anime film trilogy, international kaiju fans have wondered when they were going to get a chance to see his first outing, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters for themselves. Now, thanks to the fine folks at Netflix, the Polygon Pictures 3D animated feature makes its way to our screens this January. And here’s a nifty new trailer to prove it.
Oh my. I think I need a moment. Be right back, rewatching at max volume till my ears bleed.
Okay, I’m back.
Looks like the film was in good hands with directing duo Shizuno Kobun and Seshita Hiroyuki, along with writer Urobuchi Gen of the tokusatsu series Kamen Rider Gaim and the Madoka Magica anime. And, as previously mentioned, the fun doesn’t have to stop with the film, as an upcoming manga, with fresh information only found in the pages of this comic prequel, promises to enrich the experience.
As Planet of the Monsters is only the first of three planned films, naturally, the next in line has already been announced. Godzilla: Decisive Battle Mobile Breeder City arrives in Japanese theaters this May, and will feature a return of the fan-favorite MechaGodzilla, the big G’s robotic doppleganger, who terrorized the worlds of Godzilla many times over since his first appearance in the Showa Era, with 1974’s Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla.
Before all that pops off, we can feast our peepers on the opening salvo of this dynamic, new battle to save humanity, in the post-apocalyptic Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. It drops internationally January 17, 2018 on streaming giant Netflix.
