The next cast in line to join the swelling ranks of the Super Sentai franchise makes up not one super-team, but two. Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger makes history by pitting two equally important groups of superpowered heroes against each other in a co-headlining battle royale. The first official poster is here, and with it comes a brief synopsis of the coming events.

Right off the bat, the logo containing the names of both teams looks like that of a “versus movie”, as previously mentioned. Observed separately, the two halves don’t even look like they belong to the same series. A simple, but effective way to illustrate the differences between the two groups, despite some of their implied similarities.

One such similarity can be noted quite easily, with a glance at these early images, where members of both squads are seen handling weapons that look virtually identical. The one dividing factor between them is the collectible devices that are attached to the gun, which doubles as a transformation device. Essentially, these items are the key to unlocking the power for each member, coded to the individual.

Designs for both teams look interesting, if nothing else, but personally, I’m a bigger fan of the caped Lupinrangers, whose whimsical appearance fires my imagination in ways Patoranger only wishes it could. Then again, the cops of Patoranger have a look that recalls images of old school science-fiction such as Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.

The synopsis reads as follows:

The Lupin Collection; a collection of treasures with the power to destroy the world. When enemies from another world, The Gangler steal it, two Sentai are employed to stop them!

Dancing in the sky, vowing to reclaim the collection, Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger.

With hearts speeding fast, vowing to take down the Gangler, Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger.

For the first time in Sentai history, there will be two true simultaneous teams! Catch a glimpse as the curtain rises on these shocking events…

Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger debuts Sunday, February 11, 2018 on Japan’s TV Asahi at 9:30 AM. As per tradition, its predecessor in the Super Sentai canon, Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger ends the week prior.
