The King of Monsters is stomping onto our screens this December with tons of cataclysmic holiday cheer! Godzilla and all his giant, radioactive frenemies are showing up for this event, where several of the franchise’s most popular films will appear on the Criterion Channel from streaming site FilmStruck.
Here’s what Criterion had to say about this endeavor, what may be a prelude to an eventual physical home video release:
Godzilla fans, rejoice! This month, we’re offering you the chance to go on a veritable viewing rampage with this massive collection of 14 kaiju classics! Running from Honda’s original GODZILLA (1954) to the director’s sci-fi drama TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA (1975)—arriving on 12/8!
Among the Showa Era classics on offer, we have:
Godzilla
Godzilla Raids Again
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
Rodan
Mothra vs. Godzilla
Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster
Invasion of Astro-Monster
War of the Gargantuas
Son of Godzilla
Destroy All Monsters
All Monsters Attack
Godzilla vs. Megalon
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla
Terror of MechaGodzilla
Several of these beloved Toho Studios films, and the monsters featured within, were recently noted in TV Asahi’s Godzilla General Election, in which G-fans were polled about their favorites in the unkillable kaiju franchise.
What’s most appreciated here is that Criterion makes available both the 1954 original Gojia (Godzilla) and its 1956 US adaptation, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. When watching the two films back-to-back, one can observe the complicated process taken in restructuring and re-filming aspects of the original to create a new release for American audiences at the time, including pulling a Power Rangers and inserting brand new American characters. A choice very seldom made after this.
So, if you’re in the mood for some classic monster action, you could do worse than checking out the Criterion Collection.
The Godzilla-fest begins December 8, 2017 on FilmStruck.
