International action star Keanu Reeves meets his match when he comes face-to-face with the man, the myth, the legend, Sonny Chiba. While doing press in Japan, the John Wick leading man was asked about one of his personal heroes, and he began to gush about the martial arts legend, only to be shocked by the sudden entrance of Chiba himself. The result is worthy of Reeves’ trademark “Whoa”.
Sonny Chiba became a superstar in his own right, leaping from one action role to another over the course of decades, including the classic ninja film series Shadow Warriors, which inspired filmmaker Quentin Tarantino to cast the actor as his original character’s own descendant in the Kill Bill saga.
Of special interest to us here at Henshin Justice Unlimited, he also starred in the 1966 Golden Bat film, what many consider to be the live-action embodiment of Japan’s first superhero. He went on to appear in 1973’s Robot Detective before then becoming Space Sheriff Voicer, father to the 1982 progenitor of the Metal Heroes franchise, Space Sheriff Gavan himself.
The man’s bootprints are all over the faces of wannabe conquerors on every continent and every planet in the cosmos. So, it’s understandable that when the lead hero of The Matrix meets this beacon of badassery, he is a bit starstruck.
Bless you, Mister Reeves, and your humble fan reaction that lets us know that some stars, in rare cases, can be just like us.
