ScreenRant recently sat down with the director of the upcoming Mortal Kombat Legacy, Kevin Tancharoen, is a fan of indie fan films that have been cropping up lately. He says he saw a DBZ film he liked quite a bit and another for Naruto. But there’s a certain property we all know quite well around these parts that he’d like to get his hands on: THE POWER RANGERS.
He says, “always wanted to get the original cast of Power Rangers back together and do some sort of crazy dark tale of
where they are now.”
From Screenrant:
Kevin Tancharoen: Zordon is dying and Red Ranger has to go find the Green Ranger, who’s now an MMA fighter, and the Yellow Ranger died in a car accident and they all have to reunite together. You know, just make it as dark as possible. I thought that would be really fun to do.
Screen Rant: That’s brilliant. I think you would set the Internet on fire.
KT: [Laughs] You open up with the Red Ranger doing MMA. I would want to go there and I think it would be a lot of fun.
There’s been whispers on the wind that Jason David Frank has also wanted to shoot a dark Green Ranger story, so I wonder if this could actually happen. It wouldn’t be an official canon story from Saban Brands, but this could be quite the hit if released on YouTube.
Here’s a taste of what he’s done in the past. It’s his first experimental film, featuring friend of justice, Matt Mullins as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. MK:R was made as pitch to do a feature length Mortal Kombat film reboot and did get him a gig from Warner Brothers to do the Mortal Kombat web series, Legacy.
