Shout! Factory has officially announced the release date for Seijuu Sentai Gingaman, the latest in their complete season DVD sets of the Super Sentai franchise, from which Saban’s Power Rangers saga was adapted. The 1998 fantasy adventure followed five young heroes from a mystical realm sent to the human world to protect it from the invading Barban Space Pirates. It was adapted shortly thereafter into the star-spanning Power Rangers Lost Galaxy.
Gingaman is noted for its unusually low-tech approach in contrast to its counterparts in the 1990s, conjuring memories of otherworldly epics like Lord of the Rings and King Arthur. Riding into battle on horseback with mystical sabers, they fought alongside enormous, organic creatures called Seijuu (Star Beasts) that only later were sheathed in armor to resemble the more recognizable mecha (or zords) of Super Sentai and Power Rangers tradition.
Shout’s official synopsis follows:
Before Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, There Was Super Sentai! See where the worldwide phenomenon began with the original Japanese series that inspired the Power Rangers franchise! Three millennia after the first invasion of the Space Pirates Barban, a new set of Gingamen — Hyuuga, Gouki, Hayate, Hikaru, Saya — have been selected to protect the Earth. That is, unless the Barban are able to disrupt the ceremony!
Includes All 50 Episodes!
Seijuu Sentai Gingaman is available to pre-order at Shout! Factory for $47.99, if you want to support more domestic tokusatsu releases. For those looking for deal, Amazon offers the same release for a leaner $37.79. It arrives January 30, 2018.
