It’s a foregone conclusion that any sufficiently epic movie from Japan will, at some point leading up to its release, put out a trailer with a seemingly random pop music track suddenly bursting through our speakers. As cities come alight with atomic fire and buildings are toppled around fleeing citizens, someone, somewhere is belting her heart out about love and happiness to a jaunty club beat. It’s just the way of the world. And so, here we are, with the arrival of the official music video for XAI’s “WHITE OUT”, theme song to Toho’s latest in a long line of kaiju flicks, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters.

We got our first taste of this song a while back when the film’s recent trailer dropped, though I’ll forgive you if it slipped your mind. I know it slipped mine, since the visuals of the piece left little room for much else. Now, we have our chance to focus on what really matters in this apocalyptic tale of a future Earth ravaged by titanic beasts: cute girls with umbrellas who like to sing!

You know, the song is actually kinda catchy. The video features a limited amount of footage from the film, favoring instead to focus on its star performer and its own artistic statements which may or may not have much direct relation to the story they’re attached to. Which isn’t exactly uncommon, as soundtrack additions go.

The film stars the voice of Ultraman Zero himself, Miyano Mamoru, of Ultraman Geed and a host of other Ultraman titles in which his character appears. Suffice it to say, he’s quite well-versed in the category of slaying giant monsters. So too is Urobuchi Gen, who lends the picture his writing talents from the likes of beloved anime Madoka Magica and the henshin hero title Kamen Rider Gaim.

Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters his Japanese theaters November 17, 2017 with a Netflix release shortly thereafter.
