During the company’s Comic-Con 2014 panel, director Gareth Edwards was on hand to confirm that he would be returning for Godzilla 2, though after he takes a small break to work on other projects. Footage was then teased with possible return of iconic monsters: Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah.
The footage was displayed similar to the opening of Godzilla’s 2014 opening credits as Monarch Film reels. Spliced into the footage was a claim that “one secret remains hidden,” before unclear images of Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah were all shown with their respective “codenames” used by Monarch. The final directive to “Let Them Fight”
Gareth Edwards would later go on to state, “With the exception of the 1954 original, I would say my second favorite film is Destroy All Monsters. I just love the idea of a monster island. Having a world with these creatures in it. I find that fascinating and would like to treat that realistically. I wouldn’t want to limit it to one other foe, I think it’s more fun to – this question will come back to haunt me if we ever do a sequel – but I think multiple creatures make better movies in terms of the image of Gojira.”
It was also asked if Mecha Godzilla would ever make an appearance in the newly establish franchise. Edwards responded that while he would like the Metal Doppelganger to appear, the ball of giant robots versus monsters was clearly in Guillermo Del Toro’s court with Pacific Rim and the newly announced Pacific Rim 2.
