Advance Review: Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider – Kamen Rider Taisen (SPOILER ALERT!!)

Care of DizzyDennis on Tumblr, we have what could be plot details from Kamen Rider Taisen. Keep in mind, this is still unconfirmed, so take the following with a grain of salt. That said, hit the jump, and read the *SPOILER HEAVY* Plot Synopsis of Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai!

The following plot synopsis uses DizzyDennis’ notes on the movie which can be found here.

Kamen Rider Kabuto is the first Rider on screen, and the major focus of the movie is Gaim, Decade, Faiz, and Ichigo. Riders seen little include OOO and Fourze.

The majority of the movie, oddly, takes place in Fuuto, but Philip is nowhere to be seen. This point is mostly ignored. Shotaro’s introduction is said by DizzyDennis to be “hilarious and extremely fitting to W.” Even Fuuto-Kun apppears!

The plot involves 2 stories. The main story involves the clash between the Heisei and Showa era Kamen Riders. While DizzyDennis doesn’t give specific details, he mentions it isn’t thoroughly explained, but basically boils down to a “Clash of Pride.”

The second plot involves a boy named Shu. DizzyDennis says of this story, “(it was) interesting and surprisingly very touching at the end. The ending sold me on it.” After the climax of Shu’s story, another fight between the Riders is initiated by Ichigo, for no adequately explained reason. The plot also includes what DizzyDennis referred to as “Closure” for Faiz and Decade.

The Villains that appear include Shocker, and the Dark Line from ToQGer. The Dark Line vows to help the villains of the film because the ToQGer are not the only enemies they’ve faced, as they have battled Kamen Rider Den-O in the past! Den-O’s first appearance comes shortly after this, as he is shown fighting the Dark Line from the DenLiner. Among the villains are also a new Kaiju.

In this movie, for no explained reason, some of the defeated Riders are turned into Lock Seeds. He says that the situations where they are defeated are typically very different. Also, he says that, during the battles, there is a very over the top amount of damage done to Japan. He likens it to a scene in the movie “Inception”, where the city folds over sideways, but it then folds back into place.

As part of the Super Sentai feature, Kyoryu Red and the ToQGers appear, and transform on screen. Kyoryu Red’s appearance is not explained, nor does he communicate with anyone, but the ToQGers are established as following the Dark Line. They (ToQGers and Kyoryu Red) combine their mecha with Den-O’s Den Liner to create a new mecha, with Gabutyra forming the chest, the Den-Liner as the Feet, and the ToQGer mecha filling in the rest of the pieces. This leads to a comedic scene where Den-O expresses discontent at his spot, saying, “Hey! Why am I the feet!?”

Some extra note provided by DizzyDennis include:

* Lots of Rider Kicks are in this film.
* Shotaro and Kaito work together to find a missing turtle!
* There is a really cute credits scene with chibi, 2D riders on motorcycles riding past famous landmarks from all of the series. A great new theme plays featuring Kamen Rider Girls, and some hilarious scenes focus on the characters.
* Even though Shotaro says he only needs to be Joker, later in the film he returns as Cyclone/Joker, except without Philip. This makes NO sense for a number of reasons and it isn’t even brought up in the film.
* A trailer for the ToQger/Gaim double feature was attached after the credits.

DizzyDennis said of the movie to sum up his notes:

“Overall, a really fun Kamen Rider film. It has A LOT of problems, but I still had a ton of fun. Some of the connections and in-jokes really worked for this one. It was also cool to see that many riders on screen. If this film achieved anything noteworthy, it’s that during the film, I felt like I was taken back to my childhood when I would create these completely over-the-top stories with my tokusatsu toys. That has to count for something, right?”

Thank you to DizzyDennis for his plot synopsis! Be sure to keep an eye here to HJU for more on the Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai movie as it develops. Until then, check out a trailer below!

  • Sounds drastically different from previous summaries I've read (one of which involved a mass brainwashing), and is easily the worst of them.

... So it's probably the real one.

Really, Toei? All you could come up with to get your heroes of nearly 50 years trying to kill each other was "pride," even if that's drastically (and in some cases offensively) out of character for... well, actually, the vast majority of them?

If only they could have gotten Fujioka to appear for the amazing movie that was Megamax instead of this mess.
