Texas Toku Taisen: Tokusatsu Film Festival

Tokusatsu is near and dear to any henshin hero’s heart, it is the universe we all immerse ourselves in. From Ultraman, Ninja Captor, Super Sentai, to Kamen Rider or any of the Metal Heroes, we’ve tread a great deal of ground in the last 60 years. Well wouldn’t it be awesome to see these movies and series on the big screen with great food, great beer, awesome celebrity guests and panels, and even some rare tokusatsu exploits from productions companies in your own backyard? Well the Texas Toku Taisen is the film festival for you.

The first Texas Toku Taisen organized by Mecha Gorilla and Alamo Drafthouse, will take place at the Park North Alamo Drafthouse location ( 618 NW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX 78216) on May 15, 2014.  The Texas Toku Taisen is a film festival dedicated to showcasing the presence of the Japanese film genre tokusatsu ending the festival with a showing of the new North American release of Godzilla.

So in my ramblings over at the Justice in the Capital podcast, we’ve been talking about how awesome a tokusatsu film festival would be. The opportunity to hang out for one whole day and watch tokusatsu. The good, the bad, the ugly, the obscure, the independent, and the large and in charge. We’re done talking, now we’re making it a reality! The Texas Toku Taisen is the first tokusatsu film festival not only showcasing 18 films including the release of the Gareth Edward’s version of Godzilla, we’ll be showing independent tokusatsu film maker’s work. The festival will take place May 15, 2014 at the Alamo Drafhouse Park North location in San Antonio, Texas.
