What’s Spinnin’ DJ? Weekly Music Recommendations

Music is a huge part of our lives. Whether watching the latest Tokusatsu episodes, in the car to work, or just plain hanging around, music is accessable and ready for anyone seeking it. In my Weekly Music Recommendation, I hope to bring to you some of the best from across the Pacific, Around the World, and maybe even Down the Street!

First thing’s first; at this time, I will not be featuring artists who do not have legally obtainable CD or MP3s. This is to ensure the artists get their due support, and to avoid possible complications here on the site.
I want to stress that this is simply opinion, and you may feel free to discuss it in the comments.

That said, let’s jump into my first recommendation; a hard rockin’, veteran of the J-Rock which most anime fans have run into at least once. It’s Maximum The HORMONE!

Maximum the Hormone is a Japanese nu metal/hardcore punk band from Hachiōji, Tokyo. Their lineup since 1999 consists of Daisuke-han, Nao, Maximum the Ryo-kun, and Ue-chan.
Each member alternates singing lead vocals, often within the same song, with the exception of Ue-chan, who almost exclusively provides backup. Their MVs are often silly, and over the top, such as this video for Rolling1000Toon (Pronounced Rolling “Sen” “Ton”, a play on words based on the wrestling move Rolling Senton.”)

Since forming in ’98, MtH has released 7 Studio Albums, several singles and a few Music Videos, and provided several songs to Anime.
“Rolling1000toon” was featured as an ending theme for the Air Master anime, as well as being featured in DrumMania 10th Mix as a playable song, “What’s Up, People?!” is featured as the second opening for the Death Note anime, “Zetsubuo Billy” as it’s second ending, and their song “Akagi” was the opening theme for the Mah Jongg themed anime Akagi. Check out Akagi below!

After the extra boost of exposure from Air Master, Death Note, and Akagi, their album Buiikikaesu debuted at Number 5 on the Oricon Charts and went Gold, a record for the band. Since then, the band has played on stages such as Ozzfest Japan, and made several Gold-certified or better albums.

From Wikipedia:

Maximum the Hormone performs nu metal and hardcore punk but incorporates many elements of pop, funk, ska and extreme metal into their music as well which helps to distinguish them from many typical nu metal and hardcore punk bands. Allmusic’s Alexey Eremenko writes that Maximum the Hormone is distinguished by “a general lack of the teenage angst and self-importance characteristic of true nu-metalers”.

You can buy Maximum the Hormone albums on CDJapan. Their official English Website is found at this link!
