Tokkyuger to Reunite Shinkenger Staff

The core creators of Samurai Sentai Shinkenger will reunite to work on the upcoming 2014 Super Sentai season, Ressha Sentai Tokkyuger. This includes head producer Takaaki Utsunomiya, head writer Yasuko Kobayashi, and main director Shojiro Nakazawa. All three will return in those exact same roles for Tokkyuger.

They will be accompanied on Tokkyuger by “new” Super Sentai series action choreographer Hirofumi Fukuzawa, who suit acted as Shinken Red in Shinkenger. Fukuzawa was promoted to action choreographer with Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters and has continued in that role through Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger. Toei effects veteran Hiroshi Butsuda will be directing Tokkyuger’s special effects.

It’s not hard to imagine why Toei might want to bring the Shinkenger team back to Super Sentai. While shows like Kyoryuger and Gokaiger sold plenty of toys, Shinkenger was the last Super Sentai season to enjoy broad mainstream success (and the high home video sales that follow). Shinkenger spawned the first Returns special, a recent novel, and launched star Tori Matsuzaka (who portrayed Takeru Shiba) into a successful acting career.

Despite its high toy sales, Kyoryuger has proven unable to bring Sentai back out of the deep ratings slump that began during Go-Busters. Shinkenger, however, was the last Super Sentai season to reverse the general trend of declining ratings in this decade. Toei probably wants to see if Team Shinkenger can catch lightning in a bottle a second time with Tokkyuger. Certainly, to the Japanese mainstream, trains should be no less an appealing theme than Shinkenger’s samurai motif.

  • Kyoryuger has proven unable to bring Sentai back out of the deep ratings slump that began during Go-Busters?

I thought Kyoryuger was so popular?

  • Since super sentai series as been running nonstop since battle fever j with no breaks, ratings are not going to go at it's peak much anymore,

Ratings shouldnt even be much of an issue anymore no matter how hard they try, what is important now are the high toy sales for bandai and the kids target demographic ratings only (Sentai and rider are toy commericals to promote selling toys to kids)

Reason why shinkenger had general ratings trend was that the motif was samurai, samurai are japanese cultural pride and is a intergal part of japan tradition, culture and media which makes the audience for shinkenger broader for all ages . (as for kamen rider decade it was the 10th heisei rider anniversary series, about a rider going into remade past heisei and some showa rider worlds, and decade was part of the super hero time block with shinkenger and then the first half of W ( a new start for heisei rider) after decade ended.

Guess tokkyuger is gonna try to recapture den-o and mix it in with shinkenger as seems it's gonna try to capitlize on shinkenger popluarity and the trains motif from kamen rider deno which captialized on the popluarity of japans bullet trains

Doubt that tokkyuger's gonna get sentai back in ratings anymore but would do well in toy sales

the only way to go in ratings would be, maybe 2015 TOEI should do a another ninja sentai series in a shinkenger style so that it's culturally appealing to japan like samurai motif was .
