Hayao Miyazaki may be retired, but his legacy lives on. One of Miyazaki’s more well known works, Kiki’s Delivery Service, is making the leap to Live-Action, reports Slashfilm.
The release of the movie is scheduled for March 14, 2014 and is directed by Takashi Shimizu, who directed the original versions of The Grudge. Fuka Koshiba will be playing the titular Kiki, a Witch who’s only useful skill is flying on a broom. In order to make ends meet, she takes a job as a delivery girl for a local bakery. Koshiba was previously seen in Breathless Summer, a 2012 Fuji TV Drama.
The film touches on the delicate balance between independence and reliance in a Japanese girl, according to Miyazaki himself, and it’s themes and beautiful animation made it a hit both in the US and in Japan, where it was the highest grossing film of 1989 earning ¥2,170,000,000 ($18,000,000). The film has the full approval and support of Studio Ghibli, but is not being produced by them.
What do you think about Kiki’s jump to Live Action? Are you looking forward to seeing this legendary piece of animation live, or do you think this may have been a bad move? Either way, catch Kiki’s Delivery Service March of next year!
