The Wonderful 101 Looks Wonderful!

Wonderful 101 is the latest game from director/designer Hideki Kamiya of Platinum Games fame with producer Atsushi Inaba being developed exclusively for the Wii U. The game takes Viewtiful Joe and adds a Super Sentai twist  presenting a reason why fans of the Toku genre ought to be looking into getting a Wii U right now.

Wonderful 101 is an action game that looks similar to Pikmin. Players take control of a group of Sentai inspired heroes that banded together to protect Earth from an invading Kaiju inspired race of extra terrestrials called the Gethjerk. To combat these aliens, the heroes can create constructs called Unite Morphs and as you progress through the game, rescued civilians will join the fight to increase the strength of the Morphs. You use these Morphs to fight enemies and solve puzzles.

You’ve heard a bit about the game, now it’s time to meet the champions of Wonderful 101! They have their own henshin shout of course, like most spandex wearing heroes coming out of Japan. To transform, they call out “Wonder Eyes!” followed by his/her respective color.

Wonder Red: As you might’ve guessed, Wonder Red is the leader of the group. Wonder Red’s secret identity is a teacher that goes by the name William Wedgewood. Known as the Crimson Fist, Wonder Red’s Unite Morph is called the Unite Fist. Wonder Red is voiced by Charlie Schlatter(Kevin Levin from Ben 10)

Wonder Blue: The cool yet hot headed blue swordsmen that dislikes teamwork especially when it comes to Wonder Red. As a civilian, he works as a Los Angeles policeman named Eliot Hooker. Nicknamed The Super Sonic Blade, Wonder Blue’s Unite Morph is called the Unite Sword which becomes longer and more durable as more heroes join your cause. Wonder Blue is voiced by Roger Craig Smith(Captain America in Avengers Assemble, and Chris Redfield from Resident Evil)

Wonder Green: The pudgy gunman hailing from Bordeaux,France. He’s a middle schooler who’s real name is is Jean-Sebastian Renaud. Known as the Le Sniper Supérieur. Wonder Green forms the United Gun which sacrifices the heroes you’ve amassed as live ammunition and can act as either a pisto or a machine gun. Voiced by Kari Whaigren(Enchantress from Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Blue Rose from Tiger and Bunny)

Wonder Pink: Nicknamed the Queen of Rage, Wonder Pink is an Olympic gymnast coming from Transylvania infamous for her ill temper. Her real name is Marina Cristescu and her Unite Morph is the Unite Whip which can be used to grab enemies and objects from a distance. She is voiced by Tara Strong(Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony, Barbra Gordon/Batgirl from Batman: TAS)

Those were the four that were shown at the E3 launch trailer, but a recent trailer released on August the 9th revealed three new heroes joining the fight!

Wonder Yellow: Hailing from Russia, Wonder Yellow is shy and easily embarassed. His large and muscular physique allows him to wield the Unit Hammer. Nicknamed the Hammering Russkie.

Wonder White: Wonder White is a ninja that comes from the Japan office of Wonderful 101. His real name is Momoe Byakouin, nicknamed the Claws of Calamity, his Unit Morph is the Unite Claws.

Wonder Black: The final hero shown in the new trailer, Wonder Black comes from New Dehli. Portrayed as a break dancer whose good with electronics and nicknamed The 8-Bit Enchanter.

Wonderful 101 will be hitting store shelves in North America September 15th 2013 and Europe August 23 2013. It’ll be released simultaneously in Australia and Japan on August 24 2013. Still not convinced? Check out the demo available for download on the Wii U eShop!

  • you got something wrong in the Wonder Pink section!
Tara Strong didn't voice Pinkie Pie, she voiced Twilight Sparkle. She also voices Bubbles in the Powerpuff Girls, Timmy Turner in Fairly Oddparents, and Raven in the Teen Titans cartoon.

  • I'm surprised that nobody picked up that Wonder-Green's voice actres also voiced the insane pink-haired vespa woman, Haruhara Haruko from Gainax's FLCL. Which is coincidental, because both THIS game AND FLCL have a crazy, violent pink-haired girl.
