When one thinks of the Super Sentai series, a cool hero with a strong sense of justice comes to mind, but in Unofficial Sentai Akibaranger the heroes are pretty strange. Â As the title suggests, the series takes place in Akihabara, Tokyo, and is full of delusions, old jokes and ulterior motives.
Masato Wada plays a 29 year old sentai fan, sexy actress Kyoko Hinami plays a high school girl who is also a martial arts master and Karin Ogino plays an office worker who loves to cosplay. Together the three of them protect Akihabara from invading evil forces.
But “protecting Akihabara” is only a pretense. Â Their real goal is to get Akibaranger made into a TV series. Â Therefore these odd heroes fight to be acknowledged as “official“.
One of the important parts of a sentai series is the transformation item. Â Some use belts, some use swords, but it’s generally the custom that the heroes use some kind of item to transform. Akibaranger is no exception–but their item is a figure of the character Z-cune Aoi, made by the shop manager. Â After they transform, their delusion power creates something very “Akihabara.”
The ones who made these maniacal heroes are old hats at making Super Sentai series. Â The writer is Naruhisa Arakawa, well known to Super Sentai fans, and the director is Kamen Rider and Super Sentai director Ryuta Tasaki.
With these unique characters and story, this series promises action scenes like you’ve never seen before. Â Will they be able to join the ranks of official Super Sentai? Â You won’t be able to take your eyes off these 3 heroes! Â Probably.
