The new remastered Godzilla blu-ray have may charted up very positive reviews, but fans have been fairly vocal before it’s release that some of the artwork was incorrect. Infact, it was entirely the wrong Godzilla.
The original blu-ray of the 1954 film, Godzilla, was released a couple of years ago by Classic Media, but received mostly negative reviews for it’s poor transfer and lackluster features. Fans were overjoyed when Criterion announced they were doing a brand new release of the movie, including a complete remaster. The item itself garnered high ratings, however the packaging was noted as being relatively ugly(See Above).
The Godzilla fans out there will be quick to notice that this not the Godzilla from the title movie, but from 2002s’ Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla. The artwork was actually presented online long before the release, where fans let Criterion know of their mistake so it could be fixed before it was sent off to the factories. Sadly, their help on the matter fell on deaf ears. Even worse, fans were outright ignored when they questioned Criterion about it in not just mail, but during interviews as well. Finally, they released a statement that it was an “artistic license” of the artist and that Toho themselves had approved it.
If you can skip over this one error, the blu-ray set is a must have for any kaiju fan.
