From this month’s Newtype the Live comes news that a restored, colorized home video re-release of Tsuburaya’s classic sci-fi TV series Ultra Q is in the works. Ultra Q doesn’t feature superhero but is otherwise notable for being the very first Ultra series. It was (loosely) remade in 2004 as Ultra Q: Dark Fantasy. The article doesn’t confirm release format but does mention HD, so I wouldn’t rule out Blu-Ray just yet.
While the shots shown off in the article definitely look better than colorized movies did back when I was growing up, I’ve got to admit, I think I’d probably prefer the original restored black-and-white shots. Hopefully Tsuburaya releases Ultra Q in both colorized and black-and-white formats.
These images are really big so just this once they’re hidden behind a cut. Dial-up users beware. If you want to see even bigger versions of these images, check out this post in HJU’s Tsuburaya’s Last Five Years In Review (2006-2010). (Give the thread a read, too, it’s interesting stuff!)

The Ultra Q series is a fantastic piece of Japanese Sci-Fi Television history and I think it is exciting that it will be released in color. The color is as true to real life as it can get and it gives an exciting new look for today's audiences. And if you are feeling nostalgic you can always go back and watch it in black and white!
