FRIDAY ACE: “Bootleg Haruhi” Edition – Week Of 1/27/08

The above image is from a middle school pamphlet promoting the Beijing Olympics. Now I’m not a big Haruhi freak or anything (even though this marks the sixth time I’ve referenced said anime in a blog entry >_>) but my question is how the fsck do they expect to get away with this now that the images are online? Are they going to try saying that she’s like cars from distance to justify it or something?

(Scroll down a bit for that link to see what I’m getting at but ten points to your house if you get the reference right away.)

This is a hell of a thing to come back to after my b-day vacation. That and the fact that Rambo (lit. The Second Coming of Commando) was bested at the box office by THIS atrocity (Which has me sobbing softly for Kevin Sorbo’s career). Hopefully, this week’s Friday ACE should clear things up.

-To start things off, the latest episode of indie tokusatsu classic P-Man was uploaded onto YouTube!

For those that are “caught unawares” by this, P-Man is an indie toku series that started back in 1993. Sure the SFX may seem low tech but it manages to keep the spirit of the old 1970’s tokusatsu shows that inspired it. To date, there have been 16 episodes and three movies. He even made an appearance on Otaku Reloaded:

You can get the rest of the episodes at Anime Jungle and sample some by hitting up YouTube.

Get this folks, Metal Gear Solid drinking game actually exists!

What also helps is the fact that Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection is now up for pre-order at YesAsia right now. So go on ahead and pre-order and stock up on this Fizzy Lifting Drinks or whatever you crazy alcoholics out there call it now and get ready for some Tactical Drink…Espionage…yeah that failed miserably.

Stopmotion Gunpla genius plamoo is at it again either another “What’s This” short. This time, we see the evils of the classic game, Spelunker

No matter how cool he makes the figures look, I still can’t stand Sky Girls >_>

-I know, I know, I’m talking a lot about games this time around but this bit is also passable. Even though it’s been delayed another couple of months, the intro to Smash Bros. Brawl is now on YouTube!

The Guiness Book of World Records has finally given the late Shotaro Ishinomori the record for “Most Comics Published By One Author”.

To illustrate how much epic win this is, here’s KickHopper’s first Rider Kick.

-A Dragon Ball Z Fan Film that doesn’t suck? I was just as skeptic as you are reading that statement but sure enough, there’s a crazy/ridiculously awesome one from Japan involving the revival of Freeza. As if that guy couldn’t get revived enough….

Extra bonus points go to these guys and their fan film. Namely because, like the last one, it doesn’t suck.

I wish I could find that one with the guy with the Super Saiyan afro with gold streaks….

-Let’s face it folks, the new American Gladiators sucks arse. NBC tried to bring something back because they had no other good ideas at the time. In the search for more things to rip off of for mindless reality entertainment, I expect them to do an American version of Za Gaman or Endurance within the next five years. Here’s why.

And before you say that somebody would pitch a fit and stop it, think about it. If people are stupid enough to go see Meet the Spartans in droves, the American version would be allowed to continue. Sigh.

Oh and check out the comment where some guy likens this to Japan’s treatment of POW’s. Yeesh.

To lighten the mood, I discovered UNIQLOCK. It’s a really cool musical Flash clock you can post on your blog where every few minutes, it suddenly breaks out into a dance routine set to the musical stylings of Fantastic Plastic Machine. Here’s a clip set to “Musique” by Daft Punk.

I would add this to J-ACE’s sidebar but due to WordPress’ dislike of all things Javascript, that’s not possible. However here’s the next best thing: Perfume’s Dancing Clock.

-People ask me why I tend not to buy manga from Viz or attempt to buy the US Shounen Jump anymore. I tell them it’s because of the editing. Then I get the whole “Oh! It depends on the title!” talk and we go around in circles when I cite the bastardization of the Saint Seiya manga. Well, I’ve just found one more reason not to buy anything Viz save for Phoenix.

No this isn’t an example of the wonders of breast reduction surgery. It’s the most recent edits to a chapter of Bleach in SJ. I understand that they’re going for a younger audience but I can’t help but to think back to the time when they tried to edit down the original Guyver OVA for television. It never works and you always look like an ass for even attempting it.

Meh, I don’t feel like rambling on about editing policies, check out Neb’s Blog for why I’m left scratching my head at this story.

Hasbro unleashed Transformers Universe, a new website to chronicle all things related to the franchise. They kicked things off with a CG re-enactment of the Prime/Megatron fight in Transformer The Movie

…The infuriating bit? TRANSFORMERS FANS ARE STILL BITCHING ABOUT IT!!!

If the movie looked like that it would have flopped harder than any movie in history, ever.

This CGI wouldnt work for anything but a short. it’s nice, but looking at the models, it’s terribly obvious they cant transform, and they arent even designed to make it look possible. Prime’s body is the entire truck cab with arms attached.there are square holes for the arms to come out of it. We’re basically watching clunky, mis-proportioned action masters beat each other up.

Throw in a shot by shot nitpick and yeah, I’m fighting the urge to jam a shotgun barrel into my ear. Be happy that you finally got something you whined about for years, goddamnit!

You people bitching about the live action movie in this topic completely ruined this short for me. thanks. every time I think about it now I just want to punch something and yell “SHUT THE FUCK UP”

-And now, L in tub.

….Wow I’m really digging this movie now. Right.

Scans have come in for the new Super Robot Taisen game, Super Robot Taisen A Portable for the PSP. Click the pic for the full size scan.

This is a bit of a relief after seeing the pics from Mugen Frontier but damnit, I may have to get a PSP at this rate…

Oh and guess who paid a visit to the crew at Gaki wo Tsukai Arahende for their New Year’s Special?

Sonny MOTHA FAWKING Chiba!

Hit up TV in Japan to check out the full clip!

Finally, for those that are worried, R5 Central is alive and well! The proof is in the audio.

And now, hopefully these newsbits won’t disappoint either…
Build-A-Bear: The Answer To Piracy (Kotaku)
I Forgot This Last Week: Teaser For Another Zatoichi Remake Which Looks Promising (Twitch)
Holy Shite – Tai Seng Licenses the Ashita No Joe Movie (Japanator)

That’s it for this week’s Friday ACE. And now, why you should never work at a supermarket.
